When the Democratic National Convention Committee released unused rooms back to area hotels last week, few areas were more affected than Salisbury.
Hotels in the city roughly 40 miles northeast of Charlotte found themselves scrambling: Out of 400 rooms committed to the DNCC, all but eight or nine were released, said James Meacham, executive director of Salisbury-Rowan County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
All told, the DNCC released about 7 percent of the overall 15,000 rooms in the Charlotte region.
Meacham said hotel occupancy in Salisbury during DNC week is at about 40 percent right now, when it would normally be around 65 percent. But that’s better than things looked last week. - Charlotte Observer
