St. Louis and Phoenix may try again for convention in 2016

St. Louis came up short in its bid to host 2012 Democratic Convention, but is looking towards 2016:

Standing amid a national convention that might have been his, St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay this morning confirmed that his administration is still exploring a bid for the Democratic National Convention of 2016.

St. Louis was edged out this year as the DNC host by Charlotte, a move that was apparently a nod to the fact that North Carolina is considered a swing state this year and Missouri isn’t.

“We certainly put on a good case. We know we did. And we’re thinking of putting on another bid for 2016 as well,” said Slay, talking with reporters this morning after addressing Missouri’s Democratic delegates in downtown Charlotte.

As we noted in February, Phoenix is also thinking '16:

As a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, Mayor Greg Stanton can imagine Phoenix playing host to a 2016 convention. And he doesn’t particularly care which one.

“I think Phoenix would be a great location for either the DNC or the RNC four years from now,” Stanton said this week. “As mayor I want to be actively involved.” -Cronkite News

One Valley publicist believes Phoenix has a good chance of landing the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Gordon James, owner of a public relations firm, spearheaded Phoenix's efforts to land the 2012 convention that was held last week in Tampa. Phoenix and Salt Lake City were among the finalists.

"I think Tampa won out because they had attempted to get this three different times," he said. "The third time was the charm."

James said Phoenix should shoot to host the 2016 convention.
...
James said the city will have to start working on its effort in the next 12 months.

"The Republican Selection Committee probably won't get organized for about 24 to 30 months from now," he said. "But we will want to let the Republican National Committee know that we are interested about a year from now."-KTAR

Previously, Columbus, Nashville, Salt Lake, Newark, Indianapolis, Dallas, and Cleveland have been mentioned as potential candidates to host one or both of the conventions in 2016.

Phoenix (0.00 / 0)
I went to a convention once in Phoenix, and it was the worst convention city I have ever been in. I like Arizona, but downtown Phoenix was just awful.
