Looking at Yesterday's Posts

by: DocJess

Thu Jul 19, 2012 at 05:51:15 AM EDT

DCW posted four times yesterday: 2 on Mitt and his taxing issues, once on Nancy Pelosi giving cover to all Democrats who might want to skip Charlotte, and finally on Christie as the Keynote speaker in Tampa. Mitt certainly has those money problems: compounded yesterday when it turned out that he HADN'T released his 2010 tax returns, only part of them. Missing is his FBAR - this is the form that details the information about the holdings in his reported accounts: in this case his Swiss bank account. You've filed tax returns, you know the deal. If you say "A" you need the matching form or the IRS gets suspicious and sends you a letter. As in, you say you're itemizing? You can't just say $14,973, you have to show Schedule A. A missing FBAR is bad. Per the IRS:

Account holders who do not comply with the FBAR reporting requirements may be subject to civil penalties, criminal penalties, or both.

Think audit.

And now on to the conventions. Fat Boy Slim is a nice choice for the Republicans. He's always entertaining, and he'll be able to handle anything from the crowd from the Paulites.

But it was the piece about Pelosi that really got me thinking. The quote was:

The California Democrat suggested that since Barack Obama is an incumbent, there is less of a need for Democrats to attend the convention.

I checked the source because the term "Democrats" didn't seem clear enough to me. It turns out that the Democrats to whom Pelosi was giving cover are actually House and Senate members. Which makes sense: while there are only 40 working days for the chambers between now and the end of the year, they should (within our perverse system of reelection trumping legislating) be home campaigning. But what about the rest of us? We at DCW love conventions, face it, that's why Matt started this blog and why the rest of us joined him. And in 4 years, when the Democratic primary will be interesting, we'll be here with all the delegate counts, super and not. Oreo and I had been planning on attending the convention and bringing you live posts and video (yes! we have the technology!) But as Oreo commented:

The thousands of dollars it takes to get to the convention and pay for hotel rooms could make the difference in smaller districts.

And that's true of Oreo and me, too. Between airfare, hotel and rental car, we'll each easily spend $1,000, probably closer to $1,500. Would that money be better spent on local candidates, or whomever we decide to support? A bunch of nameless, faceless donors spent $14 million last week against Bill Nelson in Florida. Hooker purveyor Sheldon Adelson has spent over $50 million so far. Could our 3 grand make that much of a difference?

It would certainly be fun to take our press passes and hob nob. The swag take would be phenomenal. We'd have a great time circulating amoungst fellow liberals. But that money might really make a difference to a local House race. Or to a group that does what the Republicans are trying to kill...like Planned Parenthood, or the ACLU as it fights voter suppression. It's a hard choice. Feel free to use the comments.

Go to the convention (4.00 / 2)
Yes, you could save $3k and donate it to worthy candidates and causes.  But your readers count on you to bring them information that they can't find elsewhere.  At the convention that will be particularly true.  And I suspect that some of the things that you report will motivate your readers to donate to some worthy candidates and causes.  And I just bet those contributions will exceed $3,000.
We are counting on you guys to provide us with a "ring side" view!
GO TO THE CONVENTION.

Morale (0.00 / 0)
I'm a big believer in the importance of morale, and of the importance of spending some money on symbolic things. Towns should try to keep their fireworks displays. Families should try to keep their summer vacations. The Marines should keep their band. And you and Oreo should go to the Convention.

Symbolism (4.00 / 1)
I mostly agree. I think your info from the convention isn't just "symbolism" for this blog, it's become a main priority. I bet the majority of others have been waiting for this time to come around. We all have to find ways to get the voting motivation peaked for the next several months. I know my state has seats to choose soon and I've been nice about people around me getting out the vote for Diane Black. She is the worst to have her campaign call at suppertime. That's just my superficial issue. Then, we've got to get voters out in Nov.

Come on fellow citizens, vote! Better yet, after you know the actual facts!

Fly? (0.00 / 0)
NC is two states away from PA, I don't know where Oreo is. Pack the car get Fiona a "I Ride Inside" cap and shirt head down 81 find a motel 6 outside the city and you're set.

If you make a budget and estimate your costs you can do a Kickstarter fundraiser (or any of the other crowd-sourcing sites)there is probably one that would suit DCW's goal.

There isn't time for you to actually get the money before the convention, but at least you know you will be reimbursed, I would even let it run through the convention so you can do a little promotion of it.

Yeah, I'd fly.... (0.00 / 0)

By the way, my car has this custom bumper sticker starring you know who...

And she has a bandana...just saying. I wouldn't drive just because it would be easier to fly down on Tuesday morning, and fly back on Thursday night. Driving would mean traveling on Monday and Friday and being tired from the trip.

It took so long for the Committee to give us credentials (we actually don't have the final information, although we received notice that we'd been approved) that there are no hotel rooms rentable NOT by the hour within a decent distance of the convention center. But that's surmountable.

What I'm really thinking about is what the $1500 could do for Elizabeth Warren. Or for Kathleen Kane. Or Sherrod Brown. Or a whole bunch of local races in my area.

I had been planning on going - I put in to take the time from work back in January. And I was willing to overcome the logistics of a bad hotel room/bad location....my iPad is ready to go and I've been practicing with iMovie so I can shoot, add titles, uplink to YouTube and publish on DCW. I very much want to bring the perspective of "regular girl on the ground" from the convention. Possibly snag a few interviews. I've been looking forward to the sessions, the platform, truly being amoungst people who think as I do.

And then came the Nancy Pelosi piece, and I started wondering...in a year when we're going to get SO BEAT on the money.....

Although I know I'm vacillating, my heart is already in Charlotte. Optimally, we'd run a DCW fundraiser, and I'd spend my money on the candidates...best of both worlds.

go, its that simple (0.00 / 0)
i do not believe your 1500 is the end of anyone's campaign. if you were doing nothing and going as opposed to doing tons of stuff and going but just not spending 1500 it might be different. the conv is a place where you can better make working connections, get tips share tips, motivate the rest of us and come home on fire to do twice as much (if that was possible in your case)

Elizabeth Warren (0.00 / 0)
is apparently rolling in money, according to a recent NYTimes article.  Liberals across the country with few other options are donating.

I would go, you two deserve it.  You could share a room and half that cost.  We're all grownups here.  I think.
